Bless her cement heart

Bird Girl from Savannah Posted by Hello

Bless her heart is definitely a Southern way of saying something;
not quite a left handed complement, not an insult, not a slur. It just a kind remark, smothered in smirk.
It's pretty cool.
I don't have the hang of it. I have so much to learn.

I moved to Alabama 2 years ago and the phrase "bless her heart" was definitely something I asked about. My southern friends laugh about it because you could say, "She's completely hideous, bless her heart," as if that made up for saying something like that! If you tack that phrase on to any insult it lessens its affect but still manages to convey the truth.

That's true what the light fantastic said about the phrase. You can say something absolutely horrible about someone, but just add 'bless her heart' at the end and it totally changes the tone. It's like saying 'though it's not her fault.'

I grew up in Alabama and I'm still not sure how it works, but it just does.
